Local Lib Dems welcome decision to have two Island MPs

17 Feb 2011

The decision that the Isle of Wight will elect two MPs from the next General Election has been welcomed by Island Liberal Democrats, following a non-politically led campaign with supporters drawn from across the poiltical parties.

Former parliamentary candidate, Jill Wareham, said: "This is great news, more than we hoped for. It was indeed a shock to learn we are going to get two MPs for the Isle of Wight. We have always said that we wanted to keep the Island as one and not share with the mainland and that we have always said we wanted two MPs to ensure we were not under-represented."

Chair of the local Lib Dem party, Sara Sheath, said: "This decision is better than we could have hoped for and will give the Island's electorate a far better representation in national politics and decision making.

"The work load for the MPs will be more manageable, given them more time to spend with the electorate on matters that are important at a local level."
