Tim Wakeley pledges to resist Conservative cuts in letter to by-election postal voters

5 Jun 2011

Lib Dem candidate for the forthcoming Binstead and Fishbourne by-election, Tim Wakeley, has pledged to resist Conservative cuts in a letter to postal voters...

Dear Resident,

On June the 23rd there will be a By-Election in Binstead and Fishbourne and with your help we can strengthen opposition to the damaging cuts to front line public services that meet the needs of the elderly, the young and the most vulnerable in our community.

As a member of the Liberal Democrat team in County Hall I would play a major role in providing the only co-ordinated resistance to the cuts inflicted by a Conservative group that lacks both creativity and imagination. The Labour Party have only one Member in County Hall and the larger group of independent councillors offer no co-ordinated opposition at all as each Independent Member ploughs their own furrow.

I pledge to resist cuts to front line public services and demonstrate that there are viable alternatives to this wholesale destruction. I shall work hard to attract green and diverse industries to the Island. I recently helped to arrange the visit of the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change to the Island to talk face to face with Island industries. It is through this wider work that Councillors can help the Island economy, building on businesses already here and developing links with government departments.

I am sure you will be delighted to learn that there is no coalition on the Island, only fervent opposition to the simplistic and destructive actions of the ruling group. A vote for Labour offers no prospect of change and a vote for the Independents only provides for one more isolated councillor without a strategy.

The Liberal Democrats offer the only real opposition please do give me your support and let us tackle the challenges together.

Yours truly

Tim Wakeley
